“For sin…deceived me…” (Romans 7:11)

I once heard a guy say, “You never find in sin what you entered sin to find.”  And I think there is a lot of truth in that statement.  Sin lies & when we believe the lie of sin we begin to lie to ourselves.  We often enjoy sin there is no doubt about it. I mean sin is so attractive because it promises to make us feel better about ourselves, or justified, or respected, or give us some pleasure…at least for a while.

But sin begets sin & sin has an insatiable appetite.

When once we start to give sin a place in our lives, our appetite for sin begins to be our only appetite.  So we continually go back to the place where we felt some happiness, or success or pleasure & that appetite begins to control our actions, thoughts, relationships.  And soon the entirety of our lives is consumed with the acquisition of that same pleasure.  And it owns us.  Sin doesn’t produce what it promises. It does give a flavor of pleasure in the short term, but the in the long term it owns us and makes us addicts.

The lie of sin creates 2 groups of people the rebel & the self righteous.

1)      The lie that creates in us rebellion: On the one hand, sin might say when it meets the commandments of God: “You can’t keep these commandments, and you wouldn’t want to if you could. And so there is no hope for you if there is a holy God, and you may as well put all that out of your head and get as much pleasure in this life as you can.”

2)      Or, on the other hand, sin might say when it meets the commandments: “You can keep these. So muster all your willpower and show yourself as good as the next guy to get ready for the judgment.”

I hope that we might really begin to believe Jesus when he says that he came to bring life & life to the full.  In Christ all we need for life is found.  Let our search for joy, peace, happiness find its end in Christ.
